Grizzlies

November 5th, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

No, we’re not talking Memphis today. We’re talking bears. Not Da Bears. Lower case bears.

I’ve been reading a lot of post-election articles today.  One of the more interesting ones — interesting solely on the fact that it even made it to CNN’s front page list of election-related articles — is this one regarding the First Dog.  Apparently, President Truman (of Dewey Defeats Truman fame) said, “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”  President Clinton had a dog and a cat.  Not to be outdone, President Bush had two dogs and a cat.  And now, Obama is getting one for his daughters as well.  But what I found funny was that, after listing all this, CNN notes that Thomas Jefferson kept two grizzly bears in a cage on the White House lawn.  Ha.  Mr. Jefferson apparently lives by my go big or go home mantra.  Good for him.

Another Weekend End

November 2nd, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

There goes another weekend.  I saw a lot of my favorite people this weekend (in the order of appearance:  Wogman, Roger, Diane, Jackie, Steph, and Tim, plus a ton of undergrad friends who came down for Homecomings and the Trustees meeting).  The trip involved a lot of …social imbibement… (but in a completely normal and healthy manner!).

The Miami game was horrible.  And great?  I kind of had the feeling the entire game that Miami would undoubtedly come back and take control of the game.  Midway through the third quarter, and definitely by the start of the fourth quarter, I really started believing that Virginia would be able to hold on to its lead and take the W.  But, of course, per usual, the second I began to belieVe, everything went down the drain.

Of course, this is great news.  Three more losses and we’ll manage to be bowl ineligible!

With Roger!

And roger is driving! Yay! But he keeps cheering for Obama signs and
hissing at McCain signs. Boo.

Technology is Amazing

October 31st, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

I have long been a proponent of the interwebs. (What does that even
mean, now that I thijk about it?) But I am sitting here en route to
DC via the BoltBus and I am just simply amazed. This bus, for one,
has leather seats. Secondly, it has free wifi (and if you me at all,
you know I love wifi. And free stuff). Third, it’s even got plugs for
laptops and stuff at every seat! That’s truly amazing, no? Ok well
granted my plug doesn’t actually work and I am making this post with
my blackberry and not my laptop, but all of that notwithstanding, this
is pretty cool.

The person sitting next to me is trying to give me brain cancer. Me.
Personally. Ok that may be a stretch. But he has had the phone
attached to his ear since we left an hour ago and has been on the
phone since. Oh great. The lady in front of me just started chatting
too. It’s a conspiracy, I’ve decided.

Happy. Halloween! I am not a huge fan of this holiday mostly because
I hate dressing up in costumes. I know how ridiculous that sounds
since I did, after all, graduate from UVA Law. But it’s true. I
somehow survives three feb clubs participating n the full spirit of
things while still hating dressing up. So tonight I’m glad to visit
and stay with a friend in DC who also does not like dressing up. I get
fewer nasty glares this way.

Alright well I think I am going to try to go back to sleep. Ew. The
guy next to me just took off his shoes.

Opening Night!

October 29th, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

Opening night for the Suns.  Sean did not play.  I’m pissed.

Also opening night for the Knicks.  1-0!

Brrrrr

October 29th, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

It is only October 29…how can there already be snow flurries in the air? This does not bode well for my coping with and adjustment to the city. My body is accustomed to chilly Octobers, golf-weather Novembers, and short sleeve Decembers. Ahh, sweet Virginia.

Also, I am now able to make updates via my blackberry. So, expect more random posts, though also probably more grammatically disastrous and typo-laden posts.

The E train is surprisingly empty this morning.

Quarter Century

October 28th, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

The quarter century birthday is supposedly “a big one.”  I don’t really know what that means - every birthday pretty much seems the same to me.  In any event, I’m thankful for my friends up here who took the time to get drinks with me, or get dinner with me, etc.  I’m also thankful for all the Facebook messages, etc. that I received.

But I can’t help but to note that it is very difficult to really celebrate “a big one” when you’ve just moved to a new city and have very few friends in town.  That is all.

Highly Improbable

October 25th, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

ACC StandingsDown but not out.  This seems to be the Wahoo mentality these past several weeks.  Except for this week.  This week, they’re on top of the world.

No one saw this coming.  Not even me, the blindly loyal fan who sees a national championship-caliber team year-in, year out.  Alright, I know.  I’ve been trying to root against UVA this season in hopes of getting a changing of the coaching staff guards.  But you see, it’s all in the best interests of UVA!  I was willing to sacrifice one season for the betterment of all future seasons.  It takes a truly devout fan to make such commitments.

In any event, was anyone else as absolutely furious at Al Groh as I was when he got the sideline interference penalty?  As it turned out, we were still able to pull off the win.  But can you imagine the heat he’d be getting had Georgia Tech managed to get a touchdown on that drive?  Egad.

This is easily the most painful season for me to watch.  I see UVA make a great play, and I instinctively celebrate, but then immediately am torn, since the more great plays UVA makes, the smaller the chance of a new coach.  Alas.

At this point, it doesn’t look like losing out our season will do us any good on the Coach front.  Does that mean I should return to happily rooting for the Cavs again?  I don’t know.

In any event.  It was great to see Carolina win and Virginia Tech lose.  All is good in the world.  Except Duke won.  What’s up with that??

J-E-T-S?

October 25th, 2008 by Brian J. Leung

No, I haven’t converted to be a Jets fan.  I just noticed that someone from New York Jets LLC was reading this website.  Ha.  That’s awesome.  I am clearly making it in this world.  Jets.  C-SPAN.  Various law firms.  I am so popular.

Woo, Roger is in town this weekend.  And I went out to Brooklyn last night.  (I know, I know…who does that?)  It is nice and quiet.  I still don’t think I could live all the way out there because the commute was longer than I can handle.  But once in a (very long) while, I guess I can go out there.

Alright.  Almost time for football.  And dim sum.  Mmm, dim sum.
