Technology is Amazing

Friday, October 31st, 2008

I have long been a proponent of the interwebs. (What does that even
mean, now that I thijk about it?) But I am sitting here en route to
DC via the BoltBus and I am just simply amazed. This bus, for one,
has leather seats. Secondly, it has free wifi (and if you me at all,
you know I love wifi. And free stuff). Third, it’s even got plugs for
laptops and stuff at every seat! That’s truly amazing, no? Ok well
granted my plug doesn’t actually work and I am making this post with
my blackberry and not my laptop, but all of that notwithstanding, this
is pretty cool.

The person sitting next to me is trying to give me brain cancer. Me.
Personally. Ok that may be a stretch. But he has had the phone
attached to his ear since we left an hour ago and has been on the
phone since. Oh great. The lady in front of me just started chatting
too. It’s a conspiracy, I’ve decided.

Happy. Halloween! I am not a huge fan of this holiday mostly because
I hate dressing up in costumes. I know how ridiculous that sounds
since I did, after all, graduate from UVA Law. But it’s true. I
somehow survives three feb clubs participating n the full spirit of
things while still hating dressing up. So tonight I’m glad to visit
and stay with a friend in DC who also does not like dressing up. I get
fewer nasty glares this way.

Alright well I think I am going to try to go back to sleep. Ew. The
guy next to me just took off his shoes.

Opening Night!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Opening night for the Suns.  Sean did not play.  I’m pissed.

Also opening night for the Knicks.  1-0!

Brrrrr

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

It is only October 29…how can there already be snow flurries in the air? This does not bode well for my coping with and adjustment to the city. My body is accustomed to chilly Octobers, golf-weather Novembers, and short sleeve Decembers. Ahh, sweet Virginia.

Also, I am now able to make updates via my blackberry. So, expect more random posts, though also probably more grammatically disastrous and typo-laden posts.

The E train is surprisingly empty this morning.

Quarter Century

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The quarter century birthday is supposedly “a big one.”  I don’t really know what that means - every birthday pretty much seems the same to me.  In any event, I’m thankful for my friends up here who took the time to get drinks with me, or get dinner with me, etc.  I’m also thankful for all the Facebook messages, etc. that I received.

But I can’t help but to note that it is very difficult to really celebrate “a big one” when you’ve just moved to a new city and have very few friends in town.  That is all.

J-E-T-S?

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

No, I haven’t converted to be a Jets fan.  I just noticed that someone from New York Jets LLC was reading this website.  Ha.  That’s awesome.  I am clearly making it in this world.  Jets.  C-SPAN.  Various law firms.  I am so popular.

Woo, Roger is in town this weekend.  And I went out to Brooklyn last night.  (I know, I know…who does that?)  It is nice and quiet.  I still don’t think I could live all the way out there because the commute was longer than I can handle.  But once in a (very long) while, I guess I can go out there.

Alright.  Almost time for football.  And dim sum.  Mmm, dim sum.

Sweet Home Charlottesville

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Mmm, I do love me some Charlottesville.  I got to go down this past weekend for a few days and it was awesome.  A great UVA football victory, the driving range at Birdwood, leaves changing colors, clean air you can actually breathe.  I couldn’t have asked for much more, really.  Diane was awesome with her hospitality, letting me stay well past my welcome, I’m sure.  Also, all my 1Ls (OK, they’re 3Ls now, but I will forever call them my 1Ls) who took time out and hung out with me are awesome.  I don’t really have all that much to say except for everything was awesome.  But nonetheless, I had to post this because:

Jeff Kauten: I totally expect an entry on your blog about your trip down to VAyyyyyyy

So there you go, Jeff.  It was great seeing everyone, and hopefully I will be back in a couple weeks for Homecomings!  Until then, Roger is in town. Woo!

The Oldest Rivalry in the South

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Virginia.  Carolina.  113th Meeting.

North Carolina has not beaten Virginia on the road since 1981.

Clint Sintim leads the nation’s linebackers in sacks, with 8 this season.

Cedric Peerman, back at full health, has had back-to-back 100-yard games.

These are all great facts for Al Groh.  These are not-as-great facts for the long-term thinking Wahoo fan.

I’ll be in Charlottesville this weekend - please hit me up!

Live Blogging the Final Presidential Debate

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Caveat:  This liveblog is not intended to be informational in any way whatsoever.  Don’t expect to learn the issues by reading this.  Do, however, expect to question how it’s possible that I have two higher education degrees and am gainfully employed.

8:59:  CNN just showed the introductory “Final Presidential Debate” screen.  Final and Debate were in blue.  Presidential was in red.  That’s 2 parts blue, 1 part red.  In other words, CNN is clearly liberal.

9:02:  Obama is wearing a red tie.  McCain is wearing a blue tie.  I am confused.

9:03:  McCain is a little fidgety.  Obama looks tired, and perhaps a little high.  Is this normal?

9:05:  I am bored already.

9:05:  Obama just got a point from Martin on CNN’s little scorecard thing for saying Thank You to Hofstra, the people of New York, and Bob.  Intriguing.

9:10:  Obama says that 95% of the people will receive a tax cut under his plan.  What about the fact that 100% of the people under McCain’s plan will receive a tax cut?

9:11:  Can someone tell McCain to stop saying “spread the wealth around?”  The point has been driven home.

9:15:  I just spent the past 3 minutes staring at Obama’s big left ear.  Oops.

9:16:  Oh god.  I was just told that I have a reader while I am liveblogging.  Now I’ve got pressure.

9:17:  Did McCain just mention energy?  I didn’t realize Palin wrote his script!

9:19:  But McCain - I LIKE planetariums!  …planetarii?  …planeteria?

9:21:  Oh SNAP.  McCain is SICK AND TIRED of the Bush comparisons.  Booyah.

9:22:  From Casey:  Joe the Plumber.

Joe the Plumber

9:23:  I hate left-wing commentary on Fox News.

9:24:  Obama:  “You’ve shown tremendous independence [from the Republican Party] on…torture, for example.”  Hmm.

9:25:  I got an email from C-Span saying that they see that I’m live blogging and offering some tools to help me out, in order to embed clips, etc.  I am sure it is a standard message, but it’s nice that it’s (a) emailed directly to me, (b) addressed to me, and (c) from C-Span!

9:28:  I won’t lie.  I kind of like negative campaigning.  I wrote a paper in college on the benefits of negative campaigning.

9:29:  Negative points for Obama switching the question from negative campaigning to another comparison of McCain to Bush.

9:33:  When does Top Chef come back on?

9:34:  I’m sure he’ll finish the thought differently, but in response to Obama saying that it was inappropriate for people at Palin’s rally to scream “Terrorist!” and “Kill him!”, McCain said, “I am proud of the people who attend our rallies.”

Shrek9:35:  Seriously, is it the HD or something?  Obama’s ears are HUGE!  You want to draw comparisons between a presidential candidate and Bush?  There you go.  Ogre-sized ears.  That, and the pausing every 2 seconds.

9:39:  Another analyst just gave Obama a point for laughing in the middle of McCain’s statement.

9:41:  Um, I think in Palin’s entire life, she also has not forgotten where she’s come from.  WASILLA 4 LIFE BABY!

9:43:  Oh my god.  Is one of Palin’s major strong points that she understands special needs children?  I understand this is important, but is this one of your top 3 strong points?

9:44:  “Palin has ignited people across the country who have never been involved in politics.”  I’m not sure what McCain’s aides are telling him, but I’m not sure this is as positive a statement as McCain thinks.

9:46:  THANK YOU, MCCAIN.  Why DO we always need to spend more?!

9:46:  McCain looks like he has to pass some gas.

9:48:  McCain: “We can do anything we put our minds to.”

9:52:  Oops, I stopped paying attention again. There was a fire truck driving by my street.  Apparently, flashing lights and sirens are all it takes…

9:54:  Isn’t this supposed to be on domestic issues?  Let’s stop discussing free trade, etc., yes?

9:55:  It is really, really annoying me that Obama keeps laughing at what McCain is saying.  A lot.

10:01:  ZERO?!  McCain is clearly jaw-droppingly shocked.

10:09:   Does anyone think that Obama just kind of rolled up into the debate tonight?  Sort of a last minute scramble?

10:14:  If you’re wondering why my posts are getting fewer and farther in between, it’s because I’m losing interest.  I don’t want to hear about individual past voting, point by point.

10:15:  Obama is against Cavalier activity.  He just solidified my vote against him. GO HOOS!

10:20:  The same guy that gave Obama a point for thanking Hofstra just gave McCain a negative point for saying “We need to encourage groups like Teach for America.”

10:21:  Obama: “We have a tradition of local control of education.”  Hmm.  I believe that’s called the Constitution?

10:22:  I’m not the only one liveblogging tonight.  Joe the Plumber has a few words to say.  [Thanks, Casey!]

10:26:  I would like to see what McCain is scribbling on his tablet.  I bet he’s just doodling.

10:26:  Did Obama just say SLUTS??

10:28:  What I like about McCain is that when he’s talking, he seems earnest and genuine and heartfelt.  What I don’t like about Obama is that when he’s talking, I feel like I’m getting talked to / yelled at.

10:32:  Obama:  “If you give me the extraordinary honor of serving as your President, I will…” [pause] [stutter] [lightbulb] “work tirelessly.”

10:33:  McCain gets dissed by Michelle Obama.

OK, that’s it for me now.  This was perhaps the best of the three debates, I thought.  Perhaps it’s because I entertained myself through this liveblog.  Perhaps it’s because they talked to each other.  Good night, folks.  Go out and vote now.  It’ll make you feel big and strong.
