Dad Shows Support

Monday, March 31st, 2008

My dad demonstrated his support for me tonight.  In response to my AIM away message that I just finished my 30 page paper, he writes:

Dad’s Screenname: that is good  boy

Thanks, Dad.  That was heartwarming.  Haha

Losing Steam

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I have been chugging along on my paper all day, and in a mere 7 hours, I was able to double what I had done in the past two days combined.  However, I have an 8:15 class tomorrow morning and know that I won’t be able to stay up late tonight to continue working on it.  This depresses me.  As a result, I am losing steam on my paper.  I just can’t go on.

Also, 8:15 is a horrible time to have class.  I really like the class - a lot - but man, it’s hard to get going at that ungodly time of day.

I’m sorry I have nothing really of any note to say here today.

There endeth the season

Friday, March 28th, 2008

BasketballTake down the net.  Put away the whistle.  Deflate the rock.  Thus ends the Virginia basketball season, and my student basketball career. It’s been a rough season indeed. What started off as a promising and downright inspiring victory over Arizona on the road at the beginning of the year was followed up with disappointment as we saw our team plagued with injuries (most notably, Tunji Soroye and Lars I-Don’t-Need-A-Last-Name).

But then Lars comes back and our team shows a little bit of life at the end of the season, turning a trainwreck into 4 Ws out of the last 6 games to end the regular season, and playing in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) to end up with an overall winning 17-16 record. Alright, fine. The CBI is not exactly the most prestigious of tournaments. Alright, fine. Unless you read my site or are a fan of one of the mid-major schools that “made it” to the tournament, you’ve probably never even heard of the CBI.

I don’t care what you think about the CBI. The CBI, no matter how you slice it, gave Sean Singletary, Ryan Pettinella, and Adrian Joseph one last chance to play.  And more importantly (for me at least) it gave us, the fans, one last chance to enjoy watching them play before they move on to bigger and better things, whether it’s the NBA, Development League, Europe, or something non-basketball altogether.

Sean HappyIn any event, are we all that disappointed in this year’s season?  Yes, last year we were a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament.  Yes, this year we ended with a poor (I am not even going to give numbers here) ACC (and overall) record.  But look at our losses.  They’ve been (a) with an injury-plagued team, (b) within two points, or (c) in overtime.  Sure, a couple blowouts like Xavier (Elite Eight team) and Clemson (a 5 seed), but honestly, what did people really expect?  We all know we got pretty lucky with an easy schedule last year, and while this year’s schedule was not particularly taxing within the conference (not to mention a few difficult OOC games), it was certainly a step above last year’s.

I’m not saying we should all be elated with this year’s outcome.  I’m saying that we shouldn’t consider this year a miserable failure.  Yes, we want conference and national championships.  But Virginia is just not yet at that caliber.  One year, hopefully.

Anyway, at the last home game, in a disappointing loss against Bradley (they are apparently in Illinois, who knew?), I retired the dry erase board at the JPJA.  A sad moment in Hooville (or at least, in my mind) indeed.  But we knew the day would come that I’d have to oh, I dunno, graduate?  Leave Charlottesville?  Move on with my life?  Boo.  Weak.

BigLaw is not Law.

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Professor is talking about how, say, physicians make more in rural Georgia than in NY. Student asks why is this different in law? Professor: “I’m not sure it is different. I mean, you’re talking about BigLaw, and …that’s not law.”

Aaand we’re back!

After a few days’ hiatus, BLOTUS returneth. I don’t know what happened during that time aside from my journal clearly being overwhelmingly popular and thereby exceeding my allotted bandwidth. My buddy Brian McAllester, web extraordinaire and the man who provides me with my server space, managed to fix things for me. Basically, he is the awesomest ever. Ever. Thank you thank you!

I had a whole plethora of things I wanted to post, but I’ve since forgotten them all. Because I’m an idiot. Alas, no entertainment for you.

My professor, just now: “I’ll be DAMNED if I let Northwestern pass us [in the US News rankings]!”

It’s the most wonderful time

OF THE YEAR!  Here we are, two hours into the NCAA Tournament, and my adrenaline may very well explode my heart any time now.  I do not think I will be able to get off my couch and out of my apartment to make it to class.  I mean, even with MMOD, I just don’t think I can do it.

I am heading up to DC this weekend to watch some Round 2 games - the winner of Xavier/Georgia vs. Purdue/Baylor and the winner of WVU/Zona vs. Duke/Belmont.  I can’t wait.  It’ll be awesome.

I don’t really have anything to say in today’s post.  I just want to say that I love college basketball and March Madness is the greatest time of the year ever.

Come on now, geez

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Alright.  So it’s 3AM and I don’t know why I’m still up.  But it’s a nice evening here in Charlottesville, so I’ve got all my windows open and a good breeze coming in.  But all of a sudden I had to close all my windows.  Why?  Because some punk is outside somewhere with some pot and it’s invading my breathing space in my own apartment.  Arrrgh.  This gets categorized under “Things That Suck.”

College Basketball Invitational

CBI LogoAlright, I’m fully prepared for haters to comment about how this post is totally the post of a losing team. Whatever. Until I hear something worth my time, I stand by my post. I’m excited about UVA playing in the inaugural CBI, and would rather UVA play in the CBI than the NIT. What? Am I crazy???

First of all, UVA is essentially a #1 seed in the CBI. This means that we’ve got a home game to start. Yes, we would have had a home game in the NIT too. But we’ve got first and second round home games in the CBI, plus the potential for more.

Second, I love the CBI format. Reseeding halfway through? Brilliant. I am curious to see what, if any, role that ends up playing for these teams. Also, a best-of-three series for the championship game is just sheer genius. It also guarantees that both teams get a home game.

Third, the teams, at least in this inaugural year, are weak as compared to the NIT. This means my wahoos have a greater chance of advancing to win it all. OK, I know that’s wussing out - weaker schedule, blah blah. But, I’d rather win the CBI than lose in the first or second round of the NIT.

Lastly, the CBI has potential. Who won last year’s NIT? Does anyone know? Exactly. It has been well-established that no one cares about the NIT and no one ever will. The CBI, however, is different. It’s got potential. Yes, I recognize that as of this year, no one will care about the CBI. Next year, no one will care who won it. But the CBI has the potential to overcome the NIT and become a major tournament. Think about being the first champion of a major tournament!

Anyway, maybe I am crazy, but I am glad we are in the CBI and not the NIT. We play Richmond in the first round - tomorrow night at 7pm. The other #1 seeds are Washington, UTEP, and Bradley. Weaksauce. I’m not impressed. Go Hoos.

Virginia is Sexy

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

Virginia is for LoversWhen did the state of Virginia get so sexy?  Perusing the Virginia.org website, I came across this little picture.  Alright, I know “Virginia is for lovers” has always been the state motto or catchphrase or whatever you want to call it.  That’s all fine.  But at a quick glance, “Live passionately” with the velvety red background and that sexed up Virginia script made me think that Virginia.org was all of a sudden advertising for some sort of lubricant product or lingerie or something.  Chemistry.com also came to mind, but I definitely thought adult products at first.

Please don’t take my post to be an indication of disapproval.  I mean, if Virginia wants to take it to the next level and challenge the other 49 chump states to crank up the heat, then by all means - let’s hear it for the Commonwealth! Stay classy sexy, Virginia.

Double-Dollartary and Wedding Pictures

Singletary Senior Night

Sean Singletary was named All-ACC First Team once again, for the third year straight.  He is just the third Wahoo to ever do this.  He is my hero.

Pictures of Audra and Rob’s wedding are online now.  In the meanwhile, I am sitting here in an immigration law presentation thingamajig in Caplin Pavilion and am very bored.  Unless you are my professor.  In which case, I find this enthralling.  Please don’t fail me.  The girl to the right of me is burning audiobooks on CD.  The guy to the right was checking on his stocks, until his laptop died.  Now he is just looking around aimlessly.  Save us.
