Firms on Diversity

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

Over the past couple of days, I’ve been doing a lot of research on the various firms at which I will be interviewing next week.  Something I always check up on when I’m on their website is their policy on diversity.  I realize how ridiculous some of the sites are - blah blah blah we like diversity, we have a diversity committee, and we try really hard to recruit diverse students.  Right.  I have no doubt that this is true, but eventually it just gets to a point where you’re reading the same thing over and over and you’re just not convinced that that firm really is committed to diversity.

Take, for example, this one firm.  It is certainly a strong firm and very reputable, but on diversity, all it had said on the website was that it is a great firm and that they are proud to comply with Equal Employment Opportunity.  That’s all it said.  It went on about how it doesn’t discriminate by age, race, gender, etc.  I just thought to myself (and now to all of you)…seriously?  Your diversity initiative is that you’re proud to comply with federal law?  Sweet.  That puts you at the top of my list.  Come on guys.  At least make an effort.  (I hope making this post does not diminish any chance I had at getting a job at that, or any other, firm.)

Hot or Not Team: Virginia

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

Alright HOOps fans.  We’re in trouble.  Here’s a recent quote from ESPN:

The guard play of Sean Singletary and J.R. Reynolds isn’t the only reason to get jazzed about the Cavaliers; they also move into a new facility (and open with Arizona). Virginia had a strong home court in the past but there is something about a new building that seems to bring out the best in a program. The consensus among league coaches is that Virginia could be a major player in the race for an NCAA berth.

We all know what this means:  Expectations.  Now Virginia has to meet up to some expectations to perform well this season.  We all know how UVA performs when there are pre-season expectations for the team.  Don’t hold your breath ;)

Speaking of expectations, there seems to be no expectations for our football team this year, as I’m sure you’ve already read about.  Also from ESPN:

They’re not taking a Cavalier attitude in Charlottesville about last season’s somewhat disappointing 7-5 finish and an offseason marked by turmoil and transition.

Sixth-year coach Al Groh, who had the program on a steady climb, has seen Virginia level off the last two years and after heavy losses to the NFL the last two springs. There’s no doubt this season falls under the category, “rebuilding year.”

Woohoo.  No expectations!  Haha.  Seriously though - I don’t think our season will be as piss-poor as folks are making it out to be.  Does anyone have an ESPN Insider account?  I’d like to read the rest of this article…
