Oh the delinquents

Virginia RecruitingFootball-wise, I think Virginia is having a pretty good recruiting season. It’s always hard to tell how your team’s going to look, since all recruiting articles tend to talk people up. For some reason, you never read an article saying, “UVA lands commitment because no one else wanted him.” …even though you know that sometimes, that’s gotta be true.

But among the success stories is UVA-committed Peter Lalich (for the 2007 class). He’s from Springfield, VA, but was recently selected to the Elite 11 Quarterback Competition in Southern California. It’s a camp that apparently Matt Schaub teaches at, but despite that, I hear it’s actually relatively prestigious haha. Also, I read this quote from Lalich, “I’m going to work hard to win as many ACC and National Championships as I can.” I sure hope he means it because we are reading for a step up. He’s a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com, and the #2 in the state as ranked by TheSabre. Cool deal.

But just when you start getting excited about your recruits, and article like this (from the June 30, 2006 Sabremail) comes out:

At least one recruit from the 2006 class will not ever attend the University of Virginia.

Gavin Smith, the 6-2, 270-pound defensive tackle prospect out of Wakefield High School in Raleigh (N.C.), was officially denied by Admissions earlier this week. He had an opportunity to head to Fork Union Military Academy but, for several reasons, does not want to go in that direction.

Smith had known for at least a month that there was a chance he would have to attend Fork Union, so this week’s news does not come as a complete surprise. Smith was “devastated” at not being able to get to Virginia according to his mother [DeAnn Smith], but wants to play Division 1 football this fall and is looking to head elsewhere.

Smith, who had a qualifying SAT score, had a poor final semester in the classroom (mainly due to personal reasons) and this was presumably the main reason why he was denied admission.

Oh well, what can you do?

Superman Poster (IMAX)So, despite my less-than-raving reviews of Superman Returns, I was somehow convinced to go watch it again tonight. McKenzie is in town and demands entertainment, so here I was to supply it. At least this time we saw it on IMAX! Let me tell you - if you plan on watching this movie, watch it on IMAX! The six-story-tall screen made it really THAT much better. Also, there are 20-some-odd-minutes worth of actual 3Dness. Apparently this is the first movie that has ever been converted from 2D to 3D (as opposed to otherones that were shot in 3D). So that’s kind of cool. Computer-rendered-Superman still bothered me, but the big screen almost made it OK. I’d say watching it on IMAX bumps it up half a star. At least.
