Super-B Returns

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

So…I’ve completely redone the website, as you can see.  Hopefully you like the new changes - I’ve definitely submitted to the whole “blogging” thing - I know I did the journal before, but I’ve fully incorporated real bloggy stuff now.  The website doesn’t look as cool as the older one, in my opinion, but there’s more stuff and so hopefully you’ll enjoy it.  Don’t click on the Photo Gallery yet - that’s not done.

Superman PosterAnyway, tonight I watched Superman Returns on its opening night. If you know me well, you know I have a pseudo-infatuation (it’s not too bad, I swear) with Superman, the Superman logo (the banner at the top, for one example), and all that Superman stands for (hey, truth, justice, and the American way - tell me that’s not made for a law student!).  So needless to say, I was pretty excited about this.  That said, I’ve also never seen the first and second movies (nor the third or fourth…but since this one picks up after II, we can just assume those never existed).  But I loved the Lois and Clark, New Adventures of Superman series.  Who didn’t, honestly now?  I also really like Smallville.  Yes, I know the acting is among the worst ever.  Yes, I know it’s a WB series.  But hey, it’s Superman.

So what do I find when I get there?  We watched the 8:30 showing.  The theater was full, which was good.  I love it when it’s full because then you really get into the movie.  We were still able to find seats together, which is even better.  But the first big disappointment was,  there was nobody dressed up like Superman!!  Sure there were a couple people wearing the t-shirt, but I wanted full-fledged spandex costumes!  Complete with red boots and matching cape!  Of course, if someone had left their cape sitting around, I probably would have swiped it.  But alas.  Disappointment.

Aside from that, the rest of the movie was Average-Above Average.  I wouldn’t call it amazing or the greatest movie of all time…by anybody’s standards.  It was 2 hours, 37 minutes, which of course always makes for a long movie.  But there wasn’t all that much action, the story was slow, there was a lot of build-up, and we didn’t really see Superman use that much of his superpowers.  We barely got to see him use his superspeed - we just saw when he would disappear.  I mean come on, even the WB was able to film super-speed!  The power he used most?  X-Ray vision, of course.  That sick man…

Lex Luthor was well done, I thought.  He was brilliant (and he knew it), and at the same time he had that sort of humor to him that makes him everyone’s loveable bad guy.  Jimmy was also well done.  Lois looked younger than she should have been (she looked about 23).  Also, what’s up with her and Richard’s son? Who saw that coming?  I won’t spoil it here, but seriously now.
The thing that bothered me most, though, was the computer rendering.  Whenever we saw Superman, it was just a computer rendering of him.  I say boo to this.  If I wanted to see fancy computer graphics, I would have gone to see Final Fantasy (which I did, by the way).  No, I wanted to see how you actually put a real man up in outer space!  Not a computer image of him!  BOOOO to that!  I think i sat there pissed off the entire time because of it.

Out of five stars, I think I only give it a three and a half.  Maybe a four because it is Superman, after all.  But with all the hype there was (OK, maybe it was the hype I myself put on it), I was a little disappointed.
